NFL DIVISIONAL RECAP

January 20th, 2010 Travis No comments

Another Boring Weekend

AFC
Indianapolis Colts 20, Baltimore Ravens 3
Turning Point:
With Indianapolis up 17-3 in the 3rd quarter, Ed Reed intercepted Peyton Manning and returned it to the Indy 27 only to be stripped from behind by Pierre Garcon and the Colts recovered.
Key Stat: 4. The number of Baltimore turnovers.
Result: A defensive battle opened up thanks to two late Colts touchdowns in the final 2 minutes of the half. The rest was pretty dull. The Ed Reed interception and fumble was the what if play for the Ravens. Overall just an ugly game.

New York Jets 17, San Diego Chargers 14
Turning Point:
Trailing by 3 with 2:14 and one timeout left, San Diego opted for the on-side kick. New York recovered and was able to run out the clock.
Key Stat: 3. The number of Nate Kaeding missed field goals.
Result: Oh boy. Another Chargers choke job. 3 missed field goals, Vincent Jackson kicking a challenge flag, Philip Rivers turning it over, just an all around bad game at the wrong time. Credit goes to the Jets for making the plays at the opportune times. They converted a Jim Leonard red zone interception into their first touchdown. Then Shonn Green made the big play with a 53-yard touchdown run to make it 17-7 with 7 minutes left. The Jets were able to play their game and advance. For the Chargers another year of unfulfilled expectations.

NFC
New Orleans Saints 45, Arizona Cardinals 14
Turning Point:
After Tim Hightower ran for a touchdown on the first play of the game, the Saints got to play offense. They were able to do whatever they wanted after that.
Key Stat: 90. The number of points Arizona allowed in two playoff games, an NFL record.
Result: What figured to be a shootout turned out to be another blowout. The Saints looked healthy and played like the team that started the season 13-0. New Orleans racked up 418 yards of offense and the defense did a good job of confusing Kurt Warner. He was unable to get into a rhythm all day. We’ll find out later if that’s his last game. Reggie Bush had a USC flashback with two breath taking runs, one on a punt return, the other on a 46-yard touchdown run. The Saints were hitting on all cylinders. Now can they do it two more times.

Minnesota Vikings 34, Dallas Cowboys 3
Turning Point:
Despite controlling the play early, Dallas could not score, and Minnesota took advantage with a 47-yard bomb to Sidney Rice for a 7-0 lead.
Key Stat: 6-141-3. Sidney Rice’s stat line.
Result: Brett Favre got over his Dallas playoff history and had his way with the Dallas defense, throwing for 234 yards and 4 touchdowns. On the opposite end was Tony Romo who struggled mightly with 3 turnovers. Dallas couldn’t contain Sidney Rice. He had 3 of the 4 TD catches including two home run balls of over 40 yards. The game ended in some controversy with a late TD pass to run up the score. Oh well. You wouldn’t want to run up the score on somebody who distinguishes themselves as America’s team? Or does that mean you hate America?

I’m taking a Colts-Saints Super Bowl. It’s looked it be these two the entire second half of the season, so why not give us the matchup everybody wants.

NFL WILD CARD RECAP

January 12th, 2010 Travis No comments

Thank You Cardinals and Packers for Preventing a Dud of a Weekend

AFC
New York Jets 24, Cincinnati Bengals 14
Turning Point:
Maintaining a 7-point 4th quarter lead and facing a 2nd and 8, Mark Sanchez hit Dustin Keller for 43 yards which set up a field goal and iced the game away.
Key Stat: Mark Sanchez: 12-15, 182 yards, and 1 TD. A rating of 139.4
Result: In his first playoff start, Mark Sanchez played exceptionally well and did not turn the ball over. Fellow rookie Shonn Greene ran for 135 yards and a long touchdown to put the Jets on the board. The game featured many big plays but the biggest went to Dustin Keller. His 45-yard touchdown pass gave the Jets the lead to go with his big 4th quarter catch. Cedric Benson did everything he could to keep the Bengals in it with 169 yards and a touchdown. Who would’ve guessed Mark Sanchez would be the first Pete Carroll USC QB to win a playoff game?

Baltimore Ravens 33, New England Patriots 14
Turning Point:
Ray Rice took the opening handoff 83-yards for a touchdown to set the tone. The Pats were never in the game.
Key Stat: 3- The numbers of turnovers by Tom Brady in the 1st quarter.
Result: Talk about a fast start. The Ray Rice run was the stunner but the amount of big plays that followed snowballed. Terrell Suggs sack and fumble, 14-0. Chris Carr interception, 21-0. Ed Reed interception, 24-0, end of the 1st quarter. End of the Patriots home playoff dominance. The Pats lost a home playoff game for the first time since 1978.

NFC
Dallas Cowboys 34, Philadelphia Eagles 14
Turning Point:
Felix Jones busted a 73-yard run to put the Cowboys up 34-7 for the final nail in coffin.
Key Stat: 5. The number of Cowboys possessions in the 2nd quarter which resulted in 27 points.
Result: What happened to the Eagles? Dallas is playing great but Philadelphia just collapsed the last 10 quarters of their season. The monkey has now been lifted off Tony Romo’s back and this team has been lights out since winning at New Orleans. Dallas tore apart an Eagles defense in consecutive weeks and shutdown that high flying offensive attack. It seems like the Cowboys have hit their stride the last four weeks and look to be on a roll that could carry on a few more weeks.

Arizona Cardinals 51, Green Bay Packers 45 (OT)
Turning Point:
Before the sack and fumble that led to the winning score, Aaron Rodgers overthrew Greg Jennings on the first play of overtime that would’ve been an easy 80-yard TD.
Key Stat: 1,024. The total yardage for both teams.
Result: Wow. In what became the highest scoring playoff game, it figures it would end on a defensive touchdown. Kurt Warner and Aaron Rodgers had a duel for the ages. Rodgers threw for 422 yards and 4 TD and yet was outdueled by Warner who topped him with 379 yards, 5 TDs and only 4 incompletions. The Cardinals had their way with the NFC’s top defense and took a 31-10 lead after one possession in the 3rd quarter. Following a TD, Green Bay successfully recovered an onside kick and the game was on. It looked like whoever had the ball last would win it and the Cards thought they did before usually reliable Neil Rackers shanked a 34-yard FG with 9 seconds left to send the game to OT.

NFL Week 17 in Review

January 7th, 2010 Travis No comments

Regular Season Recap, Awards, Draft Needs, and the Playoffs

Week 17, The Playoffs Are Here:

• MVP- Peyton Manning
• Defensive MVP- Charles Woodson
• Coach of the Year- Marvin Lewis
• Rookie of the Year- Brian Cushing
• Team of the 2nd Half- San Diego Chargers

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (10-6):
A healthy Tom Brady and another divisional title. However, they went 2-6 on the road and will likely have to win two road games to make it to the Super Bowl. The bigger concern is Wes Welker for not only the remainder of the playoffs but for next season.
* Jets (9-7): The luckiest team in the NFL. The beneficiary of an easy schedule, two division champs taking the week off, and a few teams tanking down the stretch equals the final playoff berth. The organization has to be thrilled with the hire of Rex Ryan and play of Mark Sanchez. The foundation is set to build.
* Dolphins (7-9): This was supposed to be their down year. They played the toughest schedule, lost their QB, RB, and still managed seven wins. Chad Henne established himself at the QB position and Ted Ginn became a playmaker. This team should be a playoff contender next season.
* Bills (6-10): This team desperately needs a QB whether it’s through the draft or free agency. Granted they probably need a coach first. The defense is in place with a solid back seven. The only thing keeping this team from the playoffs is a QB… Nothing minor.

AFC North
* Bengals (10-6):
It seemed like the core of this team was built for the playoffs for awhile in 05 but they faltered and finally regrouped this year. The key was dominating the division by going 6-0. They’re capable of getting to the Super Bowl but they need to at least win one playoff game to not indicate another fluke.
* Ravens (9-7): To complement Joe Flacco, Ray Rice emerged as a Pro Bowl RB. The odd thing is the defense took a step back yet they’re still where they were last year, the number 6 seed. It worked for them last year as they were able to get to the AFC Championship Game. The defense will need to step its game up.
* Steelers (9-7): A 5-game losing streak which included losses to Cleveland, Kansas City, and Oakland killed this team. They need to add some defensive depth. The defense could not endure the losses of Troy Polamalu and Aaron Smith. So much for defending their crown.
* Browns (5-11): An abysmal year ended with a perfect 4-0 December. Who knows if Mike Holmgren will bring Eric Mangini next year. Regardless, the team needs to make a decision on who the QB is and preferably trade the other one away.

AFC South
* Colts (14-2):
They could’ve gone undefeated but opted to rest. Peyton Manning will easily win his 4th MVP and for rookie coach Jim Caldwell he has a shot at winning it all. What looms are potential showdowns with their playoff nemeses from New England and San Diego.
* Texans (9-7): For the first time in their history they finished with a winning record. This team is ready to break through but for how much longer can we say that? Gary Kubiak has earned one more year. It’ll be playoffs or bust for this bunch next season.
* Titans (8-8): What started as a season of high expectations quickly fizzled with an 0-6 start. Enter Vince Young and the season turned around. The one constant was Chris Johnson. He became the 6th player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing and broke Marshall Faulk’s total yards from scrimmage record. They will need start adding some defensive players to replace some aging vets.
* Jaguars (7-9): The record seems a little deceiving since they did not play well against some playoff teams outside of the division. However, not many people figured they’d be contending for the playoffs, which was obvious by their lack of fan support. This seems to be the team Los Angeles officials have to targeting.

AFC West
* Chargers (13-3):
After losing to Denver at home the Chargers headed into the bye week at 2-3 and trailing by 3.5 games. They then proceeded to win 11 games in a row, overtaking the Broncos and clinching the #2 seed. Philip Rivers continued to establish himself among the top 5 best QBs in the league on their way to a 4th consecutive division title. Now can they finally get to the Super Bowl?
* Broncos (8-8): Another year, another late season collapse. While much will be made about the 6-0 start it’s the 8-4 record heading into to December with home losses to cellar dwellers Oakland and an embarrassment to close the season against KC that lingers. Kyle Orton was decent, better than Jay Cutler, but this team still lacks a QB. The difference between them and the Chargers is Philip Rivers.
* Raiders (5-11): They had some quality wins but head scratching losses. Tom Cable will likely be fired, which is unfortunate since this is the hardest a Raiders team has played since the Super Bowl, but so goes life in Mount Davis. JaMarcus Russell has one year left on his contract, so we’ll see what happens. The cycle continues.
* Chiefs (4-12): They had some quality wins. Jamal Charles emerged as a playmaker at RB. The jury is still out on Matt Cassell which has to be a concern considering the contract. The defense needs a lot of fixing after giving up an AFC worst 424 points.

NFC East
* Cowboys (11-5):
If there’s no drama, it’s not the Cowboys. It looked like the opening of Jerry World would end with another December meltdown. Yet everything changed after beating the undefeated Saints in New Orleans. From the Cowboys rode the momentum, finished with consecutive shutouts, and won the division. They’re probably playing the best ball in the NFC but have to go the long route.
* Eagles (11-5): Their final six quarters of the season were awful and it resulted in going from a bye to the final playoff seed. However that didn’t affect them last year. It looked like they were peeking and playing as the NFC favorite, now you have to wonder if they’ll fall to Dallas a 3rd time.
* Giants (8-8): How the mighty have fallen. 427 points allowed is pathetic for the talent on this defense. You have to wonder if this team quit. The 5-0 start was deceiving since they played one good team. They have a lot of work to do rebuilding their defense. Steve Smith did emerge as a reliable top target.
* Redskins (4-12): What a mess. They were down and out from Week 1. Jim Zorn is done. Jason Campbell may be too. Who knows? This team is in a state of flux. Mike Shanahan? Bill Cowher? Whoever the hire is, it’s a giant mess to clean up.

NFC North
* Vikings (12-4):
The Brett Favre experiment worked as he threw for 30 TDs and despite the late season struggle they will get a bye as the number 2 seed.
* Packers (11-5): They’ve won 7 of their last 8, the only loss coming on a TD on the last play against Pittsburgh. The offense is rolling. Aaron Rodgers continues to emerge as a top QB and the switch to the 3-4 got the Packers playing hungrier. Charles Woodson was dominant. This is the NFC dark horse.
* Bears (7-9): Jay Cutler brought expectations and things fizzled. Lovie Smith cleaned house amongst his coaching staff. Next year it’s playoffs or bust. As for Cutler, he still hasn’t had a winning record since high school.
* Lions (2-14): Matthew Stafford showed toughness and grit. There’s a lot to rebuild but we’ll see how the progress.

NFC South
* Saints (13-3):
They flirted with undefeated and had some hiccups down the stretch. Still they’re the favorites out of the NFC. The offense is the most exciting in the game. That dome will be thunderous next week.
* Falcons (9-7): The injuries to Matt Ryan and Michael Turner did in their playoff chances. However, for the first time in franchise history they had consecutive winning seasons.
* Panthers (8-8): A team in limbo. Jake Delhomme is not the answer, we’ll see if Matt Moore is. John Fox will be there another year but it seems like this will be Bill Cowher’s calling next season.
* Buccaneers (3-13): Josh Freeman showed some promise. The rest of the team is pretty bad.

NFC West
* Cardinals (10-6):
The most impressive thing was going 6-2 on the road. They won the division as expected and this could be Kurt Warner’s last hoorah.
* 49ers (8-8): The young talent is there. We’ll see how Alex Smith does with a full year under the helm with Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis, who finally became the freak player we expected, for next season. This team should be a playoff team next season.
* Seahawks (5-11): It’s time for a new quarterback. Matt Hasselbeck is not the guy anymore. They need a lot on offense. The defense is ok.
* Rams (1-15): From 3 to 2 to 1 win. That’s going in the wrong direction. The Suh will fit at the top.

NFL Week 15 in Review

December 23rd, 2009 Travis No comments

Saints Ain’t, Colts Continue, Favre Falling?, Dogging It, and the Wild AFC

Week 15, What a Mess the AFC Wild Card has become:

• So much for a Big Easy Undefeated Season. The Saints were outplayed for three quarters and couldn’t come all the way back. They were teetering for a couple of weeks and finally the loss came to a good team. Credit to Dallas for showing up and playing like the hungrier team. Now the Saints can just concentrate on the Super Bowl.
• While New Orleans couldn’t get it done, a late touchdown pass kept the Colts undefeated. With the Jets and Bills on the docket they should win them both if they want. We’ll see.
• Brett Favre is struggling. Just like normal, it’s December, he’s a man, he’s 40. I don’t blame Brad Childress for trying to take him out and Favre’s reaction was to be expected. He needs rest. Given how the Eagles are playing, Minnesota now has to win out to clinch a bye when you know they wanted to give Favre a game or two of rest prior to the bye week.
• So much for picking chalk. Six underdogs won this weekend throwing wrenches into the playoff picture. The biggest being the Denver loss to Oakland. Now we have both AFC wild card slots up for grabs, the NFC East in flux, and the NFC #2 seed there for the taking.
• Speaking of the AFC, wow. What an interesting last two weeks we’ll see. Granted in Denver and Baltimore win out it doesn’t matter. However, two sit at 8-6, six at 7-7. Both Denver and Baltimore will be underdogs on the road this week. It’s quite possible we could see five teams at 8-7 going into the last week with Miami and Houston playing an elimination game Sunday.

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (9-5):
Well it’s a road win. Now just need one more to clinch the East. Up Next: vs. Jacksonville
* Dolphins (7-7): Chad Henne made some great plays to lead them back only to give it up in overtime. Still they’ve got a great shot at the playoffs. Up Next: vs. Houston
* Jets (7-7): This team had the makings of an 8-8 squad all year. That loss probably killed their playoff hopes. Up Next: at Indianapolis
* Bills (5-9): The defense kept them in it and the off sides on the onside kick hurt. Up Next: at Atlanta

AFC North
* Bengals (9-5):
I give them a ton of credit for battling hard and nearly winning given the circumstance. Still they missed a glorious opportunity at a bye. Up Next: vs. Kansas City
* Ravens (8-6): They’ve played some cream puffs and now a playoff spot is theirs for the taking. Next week will be physical. Up Next: at Pittsburgh
* Steelers (7-7): Wow. Talk about out of nowhere. Perfect execution on that final play and somehow they went from losing their 6th straight to back in the playoff picture. Up Next: vs. Baltimore
* Browns (3-11): What a day for both Josh Cribbs and Jerome Harrison. More impressive is that this team has somehow won two in a row. Up Next: vs. Oakland

AFC South
* Colts (14-0):
Manning to Wayne does it again. Given how Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney were asking to be put back in you’d have to think they’re going for 16-0. Up next: vs. NY Jets
* Jaguars (7-7): They had a chance. The offense certainly did its part and they had the ball last but you have to wonder if that was the dagger. Up Next: at New England
* Titans (7-7): Maybe they can start thinking playoffs again. What a revival. The only thing that hurts is they have a poor conference record when it comes to tie breakers. Up Next: vs. San Diego
* Texans (7-7): I guess that’s an escape. But hey if you’re going to have an off day (like it seems every favorite did) make sure you do it against the worst team in football. Up Next: at Miami

AFC West
* Chargers (11-3):
They just need to win one of two to get a bye. They might be the Super Bowl favorite. Up Next: at Tennessee
* Broncos (8-6): Talk about falling flat on your face. They just left the AFC playoff picture wide open by losing to a two TD underdog at home giving up a game winning drive to possibly the worst starting QB in the NFL. Another December collapse? Up Next: at Philadelphia
* Raiders (5-9): They ran the ball at will and give JaMarcus Russell credit, he actually made a few plays especially the 4th and 10 conversion. Up Next: at Cleveland
* Chiefs (3-11): Giving up 40 to the Chargers or Broncos is one thing. But to the Browns? Up Next: at Cincinnati

NFC East
* Eagles (10-4):
They’re rolling. The offense is scoring a ton of points and they’re peaking in December as usual. Up Next: vs. Denver
* Cowboys (9-5): What December swoon? That might be the franchise’s biggest win this decade (sad I know). Up Next: at Washington
* Giants (8-6): That beat down of Washington had to everything to do what could not have been a worse weekend for them with the Saints stumbling and knowing the Vikings will have to play their regulars in the finale. Up Next: vs. Carolina
* Redskins (4-10): If you’re running a fake FG, twice, with 2 seconds left in the half while trailing 24-0…You pretty much know you’re fired. Luckily NBC gives America the privilege of watching this team in prime time again next week. Up Next: vs. Dallas

NFC North
* Vikings (11-3):
It’s pretty simple. Stop Peterson and get pressure with the front four and you’ll beat this team. Favre is wearing down again. Up Next: at Chicago
* Packers (9-5): They can’t be encouraged with the defensive effort especially with that last drive. Still they’ll make the playoffs. Up Next: vs. Seattle
* Bears (5-9): Next item up for bids: Interceptions for Jay Cutler. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25…Do I hear 30? Up Next: vs. Minnesota
* Lions (2-12): They were about to be blown out. I give them props for not folding in the second half against a division winner. Up Next: at San Francisco

NFC South
* Saints (13-1):
Oh well. Now they can rest some guys and get healthy as the #1 seed. Up Next: vs. Tampa Bay
* Falcons (7-7): They showed some fight and played a role of spoiler. Tony Gonzalez missed Matt Ryan. Up Next: vs. Buffalo
* Panthers (6-8): Talk about a statement. Where has that been all year? That was the Panthers of last year. Up Next: at NY Giants
* Buccaneers (2-12): Impressive win. A cross country flight and the record were enough reasons to show up and go home but they got another one. Up Next: at New Orleans

NFC West
* Cardinals (9-5):
A win is a win I think. My guess is Kurt Warner will only play a half the next game and sit in the finale. Up Next: vs. St. Louis
* 49ers (6-8): The offense is there but they still give up too many points. Up Next: vs. Detroit
* Seahawks (5-9): That’s pretty embarrassing. Up Next: at Green Bay
* Rams (1-13): They played hard and I will say the more this brutal season goes on the more I respect Steven Jackson. He even fights for his team. Up Next: at Arizona

NFL Week 14 in Review

December 17th, 2009 Travis No comments

Records in Indy, Dallas Nose Dive, Eagles Soar, Dolphins Stay a Float, and the Pitt’s

Week 14, A Week Where Losers Still Won:

• The Indianapolis Colts got ahead by 21 and stamped an NFL record 22 consecutive regular season win Sunday. Despite struggling from the 2nd quarter on, the Colts used a 7-minute 4th quarter drive to close out the victory. The Denver Broncos got a record setting performance from Brandon Marshall and despite being overwhelmed early they controlled the game until the Colts final drive. With wins in San Diego and Cincinnati early this year, Denver has to feel good about its potential road journey ahead in the wildcard round.
• I didn’t like the sound bite by Roy Williams about Dallas’ December problems. Then they played like it. San Diego is on fire and probably playing the best football right now so a loss was to expected and so will one this weekend against New Orleans. Still Dallas controls its playoff fate. If they’re going to win in January they’ve got to do something in December.
• The Eagles took control of the NFC East with their win in the Meadowlands. I’m starting to see why Eagles fans boo (minus being obnoxious). With the way they played the last two road games, how can they lose to Oakland and barely escape Washington? But they’re peaking at the right time and DeSean Jackson is becoming the game’s best home run threat.
• If the Miami Dolphins make the playoffs Tony Sporano should get coach of the year consideration. Their schedule has been brutal. They lost their quarterback and their star running back and yet somehow some way they’re in it. Chad Henne is developing into a big time player and their victory in Jacksonville keeps them in the AFC East and wildcard race. That 0-3 start seems like last year.
• I wondered last week how the Steelers could blow a game to Oakland. After losing to Cleveland, I’m not. They’ve hit rock bottom, evident by Hines Ward’s postgame tears. Even if they somehow regroup, run the table, and finish 9-7, that won’t make it (see Baltimore tie-breaker). We will see a new champion and no Terrible Towels in mid January.

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (8-5):
It pretty obvious Randy Moss was disinterested. That happens to him though. Up Next: at Buffalo
* Dolphins (7-6): Their fans helped Jacksonville’s attendance and the win helped them stay in the playoff race. Up Next: at Tennessee
* Jets (7-6): Did what they had to. If they win this week they’re serious playoff contenders. Up Next: vs. Atlanta
* Bills (5-8): As I’m typing this they intercepted Matt Cassel again. Up Next: vs. New England

AFC North
* Bengals (9-4):
They couldn’t do anything on offense and we’re blown away in the second half. Still the game against the Chargers is for a bye. Up Next: at San Diego
* Ravens (7-6): They played like a team with an open window thanks to the Steelers loss and just hammered Detroit. Up Next: vs. Chicago
* Steelers (6-7): Take away the name and first half and let’s say a team is winless with losses to Oakland, KC, and Cleveland. Would you call them the worst team in the league? Up Next: vs. Green Bay
* Browns (2-11): 8 sacks on defense and they played inspired football. Up Next: at Kansas City

AFC South
* Colts (13-0):
Now that everything is clinched do they play for undefeated? Up next: at Jacksonville
* Jaguars (7-6): That’s a huge loss. Now they have must win games against the Colts and Pats. They can’t split that. Up Next: vs. Indianapolis
* Texans (6-7): They don’t know it but that victory was for season ticket holder David Kemper. My buddy has an ex-girlfriend from Seattle that he still hates. Up Next: at St. Louis
* Titans (6-7): Everybody likes it when the Rams come to town. Up Next: vs. Miami

AFC West
* Chargers (10-3):
That’s a huge road win. They’ve won 7 in a row since the bye, 16 straight in December, and now they can all but clinch a bye this week. Up Next: vs. Cincinnati
* Broncos (8-5): Brandon Marshall’s 21 catches were unreal but it’s not wise to spot the Colts 21 points. Up Next: vs. Oakland
* Raiders (4-9): If Charlie Frye starts over JaMarcus Russell this week, you can pretty much put an end to his Raider tenure. Up Next: at Denver
* Chiefs (3-10): How’s that Matt Cassel investment looking? Up Next: vs. Cleveland

NFC East
* Eagles (9-4):
They made more big plays and made up for their defense being shredded. Up Next: vs. San Francisco
* Cowboys (8-5): Uh oh it’s December. You have to wonder if the team is starting believe this stuff. Up Next: at New Orleans
* Giants (7-6): They won’t win the division but they have a very good shot at running the table and claiming the last playoff spot. Up Next: at Washington
* Redskins (4-9): The ultimate spoiler. They’ve actually been playing well and get to mess with divisional opponents. Up Next: vs. NY Giants

NFC North
* Vikings (11-2):
That was a nice regroup. They can get a bye and start to rest some starters. Up Next: at Carolina
* Packers (9-4): Solid road win within the division and Ryan Grant and Aaron Rodgers provided some laughs. Up Next: at Pittsburgh
* Bears (5-8): 22 interceptions and counting for Jay Cutler. Up Next: at Baltimore
* Lions (2-11): I’d say that’s playing out the string. Only three more to go. Up Next: vs. Arizona

NFC South
* Saints (13-0):
It seems like they would almost be better served to lose a game. Granted back to back road games is always tough. Up Next: vs. Dallas
* Falcons (6-7): They gave the Saints all they could handle without their two best players. Close but not enough. Up Next: at NY Jets
* Panthers (5-8): So if you knew your game plan to take away Moss was working, why not make an adjustment on Wes Welker? Up Next: vs. Minnesota
* Buccaneers (1-12): At least the weather was nice. Up Next: at Seattle

NFC West
* Cardinals (8-5):
When they play bad they don’t sugar coat it. Seven turnovers means they’re all but locked into the 4 seed. That worked out last year though. Up Next: at Detroit
* 49ers (6-7): They probably won’t make the playoffs but they definitely let the Cards know they’re coming for them next year. Up Next: at Philadelphia
* Seahawks (5-8): At least Jim Mora wanted to see some fight from/with/against his team. Up Next: vs. Tampa Bay
* Rams (1-12): Null, nil, awful. Up Next: vs. Houston

NFL Week 13 in Review

December 9th, 2009 Travis No comments

Saints Survive, Cards Stacked, Giant Victory, Long Road for New England, and Steel Curtains?

Week 13, An Unlucky Number for Some Playoff Hopeful Teams:

• Remember in 2007 when the Patriots got every break possible that Monday Night in Baltimore and survived? That was the Saints on Sunday. The Meachem fumble for a TD, a 23-yard missed field goal, and an overtime overturn. They had no business winning that game and should’ve lost by double digits. They survived their one bad game. The table is set.
• I’m sure the Arizona Cardinals heard the talk about the Minnesota Vikings being the best team in the NFC/NFL. They reminded a national audience who the defending NFC Champions are. They’re gaining momentum, the offense is rolling, and that defense flustered Brett Favre and made him look uncomfortable for the first time all season. There will be a rematch in Minnesota in the divisional round.
• Giants-Cowboys is always fun and for the Giants a victory put them back in the divisional race. That was a huge swing game. They lose and their season is essentially over. Now in comes Philly for another huge potential swing game that could give the G-men the driver’s seat in the division.
• The Patriots are not the Patriots of old and it’s evident with their 1-5 road record they’re struggling. Blowing a 14-0 lead in a game they desperately wanted is not a good sign. The defense is not doing much and they couldn’t score after the early going. They may get it together in the playoffs but it doesn’t look good.
• How did the Steelers lose to the Raiders? How did they give up 21 fourth quarter points to that offense? That’s four losses in a row, two to the hapless Raiders and Chiefs. The schedule still sets up for a playoff berth but so did the games against the Raiders and Chiefs. I anticipate a new champion this year.

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (7-5):
I just don’t see this team winning two road games to make the Super Bowl. Up Next: vs. Carolina
* Dolphins (6-6): That was an impressive comeback to fall behind by 14 against an angry team and pull it out. Up Next: at Jacksonville
* Jets (6-6): We’ll see how Mark Sanchez’s knee holds up the rest of the way with an outside shot at the playoffs. Up Next: at Tampa Bay
* Bills (4-8): If you want to play games in Toronto put on an Argonauts jersey. I doubt the Sabres would let the Maple Leafs host a game in Buffalo. Up Next: at Kansas City

AFC North
* Bengals (9-3):
Took care of the Lions with ease. Looks like a division championship in the next week or two. Up Next: at Minnesota
* Steelers (6-6): That’s inexcusable. You cannot lose that game. They’re in deep deep trouble. Up Next: at Cleveland
* Ravens (6-6): They’ve dug themselves too many holes this season. What has happened to the defense? Up Next: vs. Detroit
* Browns (1-11): They had a nice opening drive. Up Next: vs. Pittsburgh

AFC South
* Colts (12-0):
The defense seems to be getting better while Manning does his thing. Up next: vs. Denver
* Jaguars (7-5): If anybody in Jacksonville wants to come watch this team you’d notice they’re currently holding the final playoff spot. Up Next: vs. Miami
* Texans (5-7): I get this feeling Gary Kubiak won’t survive another playoff-less season. Up Next: vs. Seattle
* Titans (5-7): You can end that playoff talk now. Up Next: vs. St. Louis

AFC West
* Chargers (9-3):
You know that was an emotional and special feeling for LaDanian Tomlinson to eclipse Jim Brown in Cleveland in front of him. Up Next: at Dallas
* Broncos (8-4): They scored 30 in the 2nd half, forced turnovers, and ran all over the Chiefs. They’re in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot. Up Next: at Indianapolis
* Raiders (4-8): There’s a flashback to the 70’s for this organization. It’s weird to see the quality of teams they’ve beaten this year. Up Next: vs. Washington
* Chiefs (3-9): That’s now 87 points given up in consecutive games. That can’t happen in the pros. Up Next: vs. Buffalo

NFC East
* Cowboys (8-4):
The Barber fumble turned the game around. They gave up big plays all day. Up Next: vs. San Diego
* Eagles (8-4): Facing a backup QB they did what they had to. They’ll make the playoffs (not officially) with a victory over New York. Up Next: at NY Giants
* Giants (7-5): A huge win. The big plays put them back in the playoff race and they finally showed (literally) some fight. Up Next: vs. Philadelphia
* Redskins (3-9): That’s a microcosm of the season. They had that game won. How the hell do you miss a 23-yard FG and collect a paycheck? Up Next: at Oakland

NFC North
* Vikings (10-2):
That was the Brett Favre of recent years. Arizona smothered him and Adrian Peterson all day. Up Next: vs. Cincinnati
* Packers (8-4): What an ugly game. But they held on and should be set on the playoffs. Up Next: at Chicago
* Bears (5-7): Got an early lead and held on. Up Next: vs. Green Bay
* Lions (2-10): I know football is a tough man’s game but seriously you’re paying Matt Stafford $60M, it’s an investment. Sit him until he heals. Up Next: at Baltimore

NFC South
* Saints (12-0):
That was the one survivor game. They’re going undefeated. Up Next: at Atlanta
* Falcons (6-6): They’re done. The only thing that remains is can they win 3 of 4 to finish with consecutive winning seasons for the first time in franchise history. Up Next: vs. New Orleans
* Panthers (5-7): Matt Moore stepped in and Johnathan Stewart had a big day filling in for DeAngelo Williams. Up Next: at New England
* Buccaneers (1-11): Josh Freeman finished with 300 yards and Antonio Bryant had over 100. Up Next: vs. NY Jets

NFC West
* Cardinals (8-4):
That was a dominating performance in all three phases of the game. Kurt Warner is on fire with a passer rating over 120 in four straight. Up Next: at San Francisco
* 49ers (5-7): Horrible clock management. You have the ball at your own 11 with 51 seconds left, what could you possibly do on 3rd and long? That cost them a playoff shot. Up Next: vs. Arizona
* Seahawks (5-7): The defense made some key turnovers and nice stands. Up Next: at Houston
* Rams (1-11): Another 100 yards for Steven Jackson. You have to feel for the guy. Up Next: at Tennessee

NFL Week 12 in Review

December 3rd, 2009 Travis No comments

Saint It So, Thanksgiving Stuffing, Deja Vince, Champs in Trouble, and Who Gives a Shit About Profanity?

Week 12, We’ve Hit December:

• The New Orleans Saints have been making a statement all season but what they did to the Patriots was the biggest made this season. They buried the Patriots. The offense did whatever it wanted and Drew Brees had as many incompletions as TD’s, 5.
• Wow those were some great NFL games. But hey when you put the Lions and Raiders on the national stage, what can you expect? I understand tradition with the Lions but why the Raiders? The Chargers go to Dallas in a couple of weeks, why not put that game on?
• With his Longhorns on the verge of a return to Pasadena maybe Vince Young wanted to stick it to Matt Leinart again. Vince’s heroics have given the Titans five straight wins and become the first team in NFL history to win five in a row after losing six. Who knows, maybe they can make a playoff run?
• That’s now three losses in a row for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They won’t win the division and need to get Big Ben and Troy Polamalu healthy. The schedule gets a lot easier from this point forward but they did get beat by Kansas City. They need to regroup and will have to take the show on the road in the playoffs.
• In this PC world we live in can we get over Josh McDaniels being caught saying “Motherfucking,” on the NFL Network? Why should he have to apologize for saying something everybody says on a daily basis? Compared to what a lot of stuff is said on the football this was nothing. But I guess it’s always something. Get over it people. Fuck. Wow. That’s harsh.

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (7-4):
That was a beat down. They need to fix their road woes (1-4, with the only victory in London) if they want to do anything in the playoffs. Up Next: at Miami
* Dolphins (5-6): That’s a huge loss. Buffalo’s offense should not get 31 (24 in the 4th) on this team especially after 10 days off. Up Next: vs. New England
* Jets (5-6): The pick 6 set the tone and the defense shut down the Panthers. Up Next: at Buffalo
* Bills (4-7): Fitzpatrick had a big day and they looked like an actual NFL offense for a change. Up Next: vs. NY Jets

AFC North
* Bengals (8-3):
The score differential looks nice but really they need to stop playing down to their competition. Still they’ve got this division won. Up Next: vs. Detroit
* Steelers (6-5): Dennis Dixon played well and had the game won until the late drive but the INT in OT was the difference. Up Next: vs. Oakland
* Ravens (6-5): A huge comeback win. They had to have it and they’re back in the wildcard race. Up Next: at Green Bay
* Browns (1-10): How about Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator for Brady Quinn next year? Up Next: vs. San Diego

AFC South
* Colts (11-0):
Huge second half comeback led by their defense. You wonder how they’ll play it the rest of the way when they have everything clinched up. Up next: vs. Tennessee
* Jaguars (6-5): They were embarrassed on the west coast again. They may have the 6th seed but does anyone consider them a playoff team? Up Next: vs. Jacksonville
* Texans (5-6): That was another blown game at home. When will they get over the hump? Up Next: at Jacksonville
* Titans (5-6): Vince Young continues to add to his legend as a winner. What a huge drive. Up Next: at Indianapolis

AFC West
* Chargers (8-3):
Perfect game. Beat up on the weak and rest your starters. Up Next: at Cleveland
* Broncos (7-4): That was the team they were a month ago. A playoff spot is in their control and the schedule aligns for them. Up Next: at Kansas City
* Raiders (3-8): At least everybody had had their turkey and was ready to fall asleep. Up Next: at Pittsburgh
* Chiefs (3-8): They’ve lost two games to the Chargers 80-21. There’s the gap they have to close in the rebuilding process. Up Next: vs. Denver

NFC East
* Cowboys (8-3):
They rediscovered Miles Austin and the running game. Now the calendar hits December so we’ll see what they’re made of. Up Next: at NY Giants
* Eagles (7-4): They didn’t play well and should’ve lost. Another team that plays down to the competition. Up Next: at Atlanta
* Giants (6-5): An injured team on a short week playing at altitude was what they looked like. At least you’d hope that was case. Their season comes down to the next two games. Up Next: vs. Dallas
* Redskins (3-8): They were game and frankly should’ve won but couldn’t hold it in the 4th. Up Next: vs. New Orleans

NFC North
* Vikings (10-1):
Brett Favre has only thrown 3 INTs. Who would’ve guessed that? Up Next: at Arizona
* Packers (7-4): A very balanced attack of offense and defense on Turkey Day. Up Next: vs. Baltimore
* Bears (4-7): Troy Aikman said it best during the telecast, “They talked all week about how this was their biggest game and they show up and play like this?” Up Next: vs. St. Louis
* Lions (2-9): Why was Matthew Stafford playing? He separates his shoulder three days earlier and you want to play him? He’s your franchise, he can rest. Up Next: at Cincinnati

NFC South
* Saints (11-0):
That was a statement among statements. They’re at another level. Up Next: at Washington
* Falcons (6-5): Chris Redman did the job late in relief but they need Matt Ryan healthy now. Up Next: vs. Philadelphia
* Panthers (4-7): Jake Delhomme played poorly and again it buried them. Didn’t this look like a Super Bowl team last year? Up Next: vs. Tampa Bay
* Buccaneers (1-10): They’ve lost some close games this year. Still they’re just not good enough. Up Next: at Carolina

NFC West
* Cardinals (7-4):
Poor Matt Leinart, he played so well. I don’t care if it’s John Elway let alone Vince Young you cannot allow a 99-yard drive with 3 minutes left. Up Next: vs. Minnesota
* 49ers (5-6): Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore. The talent is there and starting to mold into a decent nucleus. Up Next: at Seattle
* Seahawks (4-7): Justin Forsett had a nice day carrying it and they made enough plays in the second half. Up Next: vs. Seattle
* Rams (1-10): Kyle Boller played well but it wasn’t enough. Up Next: at Chicago

NFL Week 11 in Review

November 26th, 2009 Travis No comments

North Goes South, Charging up the West, Staff Infection, Giant Win, and Some Parity

Week 11, Sorry About Last Week:

• What a bad weekend for the AFC North. All four teams lost in close heart-breaking fashion (even Cleveland). Pittsburgh and Cincinnati had no business losing to Kansas City and Oakland and Baltimore missed a golden chance to gain ground but the late pick prevented a winning FG attempt.
• The San Diego Chargers have taken control on the AFC West with their beat down in Denver. Since being beaten in San Diego both of these teams have headed in opposite directions, to the extreme. The Chargers are flying, the Broncos collapsing.
• What guts by Matthew Stafford to throw a game winning touchdown as time expired in what turned out to be the most exciting game of the day between Cleveland and Detroit. Browns fans may be irate with that lame pass interference call on the Hail Mary. Still Brady Quinn and Stafford put on a show. Both look promising against crappy defenses.
• The New York Giants have looked awful since starting 5-0. They’re trying to get back in it and winning in overtime against Atlanta may get them going. Despite the losing streak, they’re now right back in the playoff picture for a wildcard and division title.
• All the talk early seemed to be about how the good are really good and the bad are really bad. While some of that remains true, there are 15 teams within 2 games of a playoff spot. We’re finally seeing some parity as teams have improved and come back to the pack.

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (7-3):
Jumped out to a huge lead and held on which prevent any 4th and 2 decisions. Up Next: at New Orleans
* Dolphins (5-5): Look who’s back in the wildcard race…Ricky Williams is having a rebirth and we’ll see if he can shoulder the load without Ronnie Brown. Up Next: at Buffalo
* Jets (4-6): Mark Sanchez: Rookie. Up Next: vs. Carolina
* Bills (3-7): Well at least TO got to celebrate a touchdown but the defense couldn’t hold it. Up Next: vs. Miami

AFC North
* Bengals (7-3):
Wow. That fumble hurts. Especially when they knew that Pittsburgh and Baltimore both lost earlier in the day, they could’ve put a stranglehold on the division. Up Next: vs. Cleveland
* Steelers (6-4): You could make the argument that Troy Polamalu is the most important player in the league next to Peyton Manning. Their defense is a mess without him. Up Next: at Baltimore
* Ravens (5-5): That late interception was the killer. They had contained Indy’s offense all day but you can’t settle for (five) field goals against the Colts. Up Next: vs. Pittsburgh
* Browns (1-9): That pass interference call was bullshit. Hindsight: Higher draft pick. Up Next: at Cincinnati

AFC South
* Colts (10-0):
Somehow they keep finding ways to win. This defense is making just enough plays to remain unbeaten. Up next: at Houston
* Jaguars (6-4): They’ve had a very easy schedule and have positioned themselves for a wildcard. We’ll see what they can do the rest of the way. Up Next: at San Francisco
* Texans (5-5): Man. Two straight wide lefts. They have to find ways to win close games. Up Next: vs. Indianapolis
* Titans (4-6): That’s four in a row for Vince Young. We’ll see how they do the next two weeks against division leaders. Up Next: vs. Arizona

AFC West
* Chargers (7-3):
That was making a statement. This is their division to lose. Up Next: vs. Kansas City
* Broncos (6-4): What a difference a month makes. They’ve left their team at the bye week. They’re in deep trouble. Up Next: vs. NY Giants
* Raiders (3-7): Let the Gradkowski era begin. Nice two minute drive and then of course the fumble won them the game. Up Next: at Dallas
* Chiefs (3-7): If you consider there’s upsets in pro sports that would it so far this season. Nice win and 2-0 without LJ. Up Next: at San Diego

NFC East
* Cowboys (7-3):
Since Jerry Jones was quoted about wanting to see more Felix Jones, they’ve scored only 14 points the last two games. Coincidence? Up Next: vs. Oakland
* Eagles (6-4): That was a huge win in Chicago. Good late drive and the defense forced the INT to seal it. Up Next: vs. Washington
* Giants (6-4): They tried to blow another one but were able to survive in overtime and snap the losing streak. Up Next: at Denver
* Redskins (3-7): They’re playing a lot better but the offense is still a struggle. Up Next: at Philadelphia

NFC North
* Vikings (9-1):
Just another victory on cruise control. Up Next: vs. Chicago
* Packers (6-4): The defense has stepped up the last two weeks and they’re getting some offensive balance. Up Next: at Detroit
* Bears (4-6): Jay Cutler has just been off all year. He’ll finish with around 25 INT’s. Up Next: at Minnesota
* Lions (2-8): That was an effort Matthew Stafford. Throwing a game winning TD with a dislocated shoulder to cap a 5 TD day…Not bad. Up Next: vs. Green Bay

NFC South
* Saints (10-0):
Took care of another tomato can. Up Next: vs. New England
* Falcons (5-5): They’re out of margin for error. They need to win some games now. Up Next: vs. Tampa Bay
* Panthers (4-6): They needed that swing game on Thursday. They now face a brutal finishing schedule. Up Next: at NY Jets
* Buccaneers (1-9): Just keep taking it on the chin. Up Next: at Atlanta

NFC West
* Cardinals (7-3):
They’re a completely different team without Kurt Warner. They need to keep him healthy. Up Next: at Tennessee
* 49ers (4-6): Michael Crabtree finally found the end zone. Up Next: vs. Jacksonville
* Seahawks (3-7): That was nice beating. Up Next: at St. Louis
* Rams (1-9): Almost came all the way back but the drive stalled at the Arizona 7. Up Next: vs. Seattle

NFL Week 9 in Review

November 11th, 2009 Travis No comments

Review of the First Half, Grades, and Second Half Predictions

Week 9, Halfway Home:

MVP: Peyton Manning. They’re 8-0, he’s having a great season, and truthfully they haven’t been healthy as a team. Honorable Mention: Drew Brees, Cedric Benson, Brett Favre, Jared Allen, Elvis Dumervil
Defensive MVP: Jared Allen. He’s tied for the league lead with 10.5 sacks and the mullet puts it over the top. The Minnesota defense has put pressure on the QB all year and Allen is the main reason the Vikings lead the league in sacks. Honorable Mention: Elvis Dumervil, Darren Sharper
Coach of the Year: Josh McDaniels. The offseason he went through, the trade of Jay Cutler, and rebuilding the entire atmosphere. Rather than a rebuilding season, Denver is thinking playoffs. Honorable Mention: Marvin Lewis, Jim Caldwell, Sean Payton
Rookie of the Year: Jarius Byrd. Leads the league in interceptions for Buffalo. Honorable Mention: Brian Cushing.
Team of the Half: New Orleans Saints. Undefeated and just a joy to watch. The offense has been entertainment and the defense scores as well. Honorable Mention: Indianapolis sColts

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (6-2): Grade:
A-. Brady is getting more comfortable every week but the defense has not been as good so far. Up Next: at Indianapolis.
Prediction: 11-5, Division Champs. Tough road games ahead but a down division helps.
* Jets (4-4): Grade: C. They’ve had an easy schedule and a hot start so you have to wonder if they’re really any good. Up Next: vs. Jacksonville
Prediction: 8-8, New QB, same result.
* Dolphins (3-5): Grade: C+. They’ve had a brutal schedule and lost their starting QB so it’s been somewhat impressive. That said they’ve blown two games they were in control of. Up Next: vs. Tampa Bay
Prediction: 7-9, the schedule will get easier next year and they should be back competing for the division.
* Bills (3-5): Grade: C-. They were so close to winning the opener in Foxborough but they’ve been bad offensively but rebounded the last couple of weeks. T.O. has been a waste. Up Next: at Tennessee
Prediction: 5-11, Dick Jauron will be fired at season’s end.

AFC North
* Bengals (6-2): Grade:
A. They’re a miracle deflection from being 7-1. Palmer has been an MVP candidate and the defense is making plays. Up Next: at Pittsburgh
Prediction: 12-4, Division Champ. Three tough second half road games.
* Steelers (6-2): Grade: A. About as under the radar as you can get for a Super Bowl champ but they continue to roll. Up Next: vs. Cincinnati
Prediction: 12-4, Wildcard. Very easy second half schedule and could run the table and wind up the #1 seed.
* Ravens (4-4): Grade: B-. They’re not on par with Cincy and Pittsburgh and they’ve lost to the elite teams in the league. Up Next: at Cleveland
Prediction: 10-6, could sneak into the playoffs with an easier schedule.
* Browns (1-7): Grade: F. The Saints defense has outscored this offense. They’re horrible and the future doesn’t look good either. Up Next: vs. Baltimore
Prediction: 2-14, Eric Mangini will be fired as well

AFC South
* Colts (8-0): Grade:
A+. Peyton Manning is the MVP and for the most part they haven’t been healthy. Up next: vs. New England
Prediction: 14-2, they won’t go undefeated but should have home field advantage throughout the playoffs
* Texans (5-4): Grade: B-. They’ve been inconsistent but recently the offense has picked it up and the defense is improving. Up Next: BYE
Prediction: 10-6, this should be the year they finish with a winning record and make the playoffs
* Jaguars (4-4): Grade: D. They’ve had an easy schedule and have mounted nothing. David Garrard doesn’t look to be the QB of the future. Up Next: at NY Jets
Prediction: 7-9, another disappointing season could end in relocation to LA in the future?
* Titans (2-6): Grade: F. The league’s most disappointing team. At least with the winless start they’ve gone to Vince Young for the rest of the season. Up Next: vs. Buffalo
Prediction: 4-12, crossroads for the franchise. If Young is not the answer, do they draft a QB?

AFC West
* Broncos (6-2): Grade:
A+. Most Broncos fans probably thought 6 wins would be unreachable. Josh McDaniels has done a great job and the defense has been excellent. Up Next: at Washington
Prediction: 12-4, easier second half schedule and a potential playoff bye if they deal with the expectations
* Chargers (5-3): Grade: B-. They’re gaining momentum and Philip Rivers has moved into the elite class of QB’s but the defense and running game are still issues. Up Next: vs. Philadelphia
Prediction: 10-6, loss to Baltimore prevents a playoff appearance
* Raiders (2-6): Grade: F. JaMarcus Russell looks like a bust and apathetic. Throw in the Tom Cable matter and the NFL’s Best Circus continues. Up Next: vs. Kansas City
Prediction: 3-13, Tom Cable is fired and the merry-go-round continues
* Chiefs (1-7): Grade: F+. They at least get the + for showing effort and ridding themselves of Larry Johnson. Up Next: at Oakland
Prediction: 2-14, this will be a long rebuilding process for Scott Piole and Todd Haley

NFC East
* Cowboys (6-2): Grade:
A-. The victory in Philadelphia puts them in the driver’s seat. Romo has played well, Miles Austin has become a #1 receiver but will it continue in December? Up Next: at Green Bay
Prediction: 11-5, winning a division and hosting a playoff game in the new stadium
* Eagles (5-3): Grade: B-. They have talent but have been inconsistent. They’ve been a different team every week. Up Next: at San Diego
Prediction: 10-6, they have a brutal road schedule in the second half but should claim a wildcard.
* Giants (5-4): Grade: C+. They’re still in it but with 4 straight losses against good teams they’re falling and need a bye to regroup. Up Next: BYE
Prediction: 8-8, they can’t defend the pass
* Redskins (2-6): Grade: F. Mess. They have no hope and another house cleaning awaits. Up Next: vs. Denver
Prediction: 2-14, a road trip to Oakland is the only winnable game remaining, goodbye Jim Zorn

NFC North
* Vikings (7-1): Grade:
A+. So far the Brett Favre experiment is working, Adrian Peterson is running, the defense sacking the QB, and they’re cruising to a second straight division title. Up Next: vs. Detroit
Prediction: 13-3, #2 seed
* Packers (4-4): Grade: C. Definition of average. Aaron Rodgers is great and there’s talent but no QB protection and a broken defense. Up Next: vs. Dallas
Prediction: 7-9, 7 straight rounds of drafting offensive linemen
* Bears (4-4): Grade: C. Jay Cutler has made the offense better but he’s right where he’s been his whole career, .500. Up Next: at San Francisco
Prediction: 8-8, why not, .500
* Lions (1-7): Grade: D-. Technically a 1000% improvement from last year with a win. Stafford is showing some promise. Up Next: at Minnesota
Prediction: 2-14, just ride it out with Stafford to Johnson and draft accordingly

NFC South
* Saints (8-0): Grade:
A+. 24 points is their lowest point total eclipsing 30 six times and 40 four times. An outside shot of going undefeated. Up Next: at St. Louis
Prediction: 15-1, Super Bowl favorites
* Falcons (5-3): Grade: B. All losses are to playoff teams and the schedule gets easier but you wonder if they can compete with the NFC’s elite. Up Next: at Carolina
Prediction: 11-5, solid wildcard
* Panthers (3-5): Grade: C-. They’ve played well recently once they started to run the ball but Jake Delhomme is still a question mark at QB. Up Next: vs. Atlanta
Prediction: 6-10, they have to draft a QB
* Buccaneers (1-7): Grade: F+. With the schedule I thought they could run the table. Leave it to the creamcicle uniforms. Up Next: at Miami
Prediction: 1-15, ride it out with Josh Freemen and let him grow

NFC West
* Cardinals (5-3):
Grade: B-. They’ll cruise to another division title but this team should have at least another win or two. Up Next: vs. Seattle
Prediction: 12-4, a very easy second half schedule
* 49ers (3-5): Grade: C-. It seems like they’ve never recovered from the Minnesota loss and they’re losers of five straight and haven’t won outside the division. Up Next: vs. Chicago
Prediction: 7-9, we’ll see if Alex Smith puts together a solid season and stays healthy
* Seahawks (3-5): Grade: D+. More was to be expected but they’ve beaten nobody of relevance and haven’t been competitive against good teams. Up Next: at Arizona
Prediction: 6-10, they’ll beat some bad teams but really their record will inflate their draft position
* Rams (1-7): Grade: F+. Stephen Jackson gives them a plus but they’re just horrible. Up Next: vs. New Orleans
Prediction: 1-15, and with the first overall pick…

NFL Week 8 in Review

November 5th, 2009 Travis No comments

Purple Heart, Eagles Flying, Saints Marching, New York Mute, and There Was One

Week 8, Some Desperation Showed:

• Brett Favre drove the dagger through the hearts of Packers fan. Not only did beat them twice and give the Vikings a stranglehold on the NFC North but he’s playing well. He shredded their defense for 244 yards and 4 TD’s. The reaction was about what was to be expected, more boos than cheers but he’ll take the victory over it all.
• The Eagles crushed the Giants. Desean Jackson is emerging as possibly the best deep threat in the game. As great as the Eagles were offensively, the Giants have fallen apart. They can’t put pressure on the QB right now and they’ve had to blitz and leave their patch work secondary in single coverage.
• I’m not sure if they can run the table, but the Saints offense is a machine. As good as the offense is, the defense is making the timely plays. This is the most complete team in football.
• Rex Ryan is a good young coach. But it’s time to coach and keep quiet. Your team is not very good. Are kick returns for touchdowns a gimmick? Maybe if you worked on kick coverage as much as your pre-game smack you’d still be the talk of the league.
• Congrats to the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans for avoiding the goose egg. So now it’s left to Tampa Bay to finally pick one up. With their schedule, good luck Josh Freeman.

Divisional quick hits:
AFC East
* Patriots (5-2):
BYE WEEK. Up Next: vs. Miami
* Jets (4-4): Again, it’s time these guys just shut up. You were just swept by Miami and you’re 1-4 in the last 5, stop the talk and play ball. Up Next: BYE
* Dolphins (3-4): I’d say Ted Ginn is a pretty good kick returner. Up Next: at New England
* Bills (3-5): The defense couldn’t hold Houston’s high powered offense down in the 4th. Up Next: BYE

AFC North
* Bengals (5-2):
BYE WEEK. Up Next: vs. Baltimore
* Steelers (5-2): BYE WEEK. Up Next: at Denver
* Ravens (4-3): They played desperately and had to. They’re back in it with a big swing game this week. Up Next: at Cincinnati
* Browns (1-7): You know it’s a mess when the GM is fired 8 games into his regime. Up Next: BYE

AFC South
* Colts (7-0):
They played poorly but won, a mark of a great team. Up next: vs. Houston
* Texans (5-3): Just when it looked like the offense was coming together they lose Owen Daniels for the season. Up Next: at Indianapolis
* Jaguars (3-4): Why is Maurice Jones-Drew only getting 8 carries when he had 177 yards? Up Next: vs. Kansas City
* Titans (1-6): Whether they wanted to or not, going to Vince Young is the right move and they finally won. Up Next: at San Francisco

AFC West
* Broncos (6-1):
They were going to lose at some point and running into a desperate Baltimore team did the trick. Up Next: vs. Pittsburgh
* Chargers (4-3): LaDanian Tomlinson finally found the end zone. All it takes is a visit from the Raiders. Up Next: at NY Giants
* Raiders (2-6): Russell actually played well and they had a shot but still not enough. Up Next: BYE
* Chiefs (1-6): BYE WEEK. Up Next: at Jacksonville

NFC East
* Eagles (5-2):
I’d say they’ve woken up since the Oakland loss. They ended the game by halftime. Up Next: vs. Dallas
* Cowboys (5-2): Their offense is finally starting to click. The RB’s are healthy and Miles Austin is emerging as a top notch WR. Up Next: at Philadelphia
* Giants (5-3): How quickly it all changes. Their pass defense is a mess and now they get Philip Rivers. Up Next: vs. San Diego
* Redskins (2-5): BYE WEEK. Up Next: at Atlanta

NFC North
* Vikings (7-1):
You know that game meant a lot to Brett Favre with his emotional postgame interview but more importantly they took control of the division. Up Next: BYE
* Packers (4-3): Aaron Rodgers is an elite QB but if they don’t fix their o-line they’re going to get him killed. Up Next: at Tampa Bay
* Bears (4-3): 26 carries for Matt Forte, a novel concept. Now if they could get the Browns every week. Up Next: vs. Arizona
* Lions (1-6): We must protect this house! And the 19-game losing streak and potential higher pick tie breaker. Up Next: at Seattle

NFC South
* Saints (7-0):
They put up 35 points and were somewhat contained in the second half. Rediculous. Up Next: vs. Carolina
* Falcons (4-3): They won’t catch the Saints but the schedule gets easier and wild card is there for the taking. Up Next: vs. Washington
* Panthers (3-4): Forcing 6 turnovers helped but more importantly they ran for 270 yards, finally Panther football. Up Next: at New Orleans
* Buccaneers (0-7): BYE WEEK. Schedule: GB, @ Mia, NO, @ Atl, @ Car, NYJ, @ Sea, @ NO, Atl. Up Next: vs. Green Bay

NFC West
* Cardinals (4-3):
Kurt Warner had the worst day of his career but what happened to that #1 rushing defense? Up Next: at Chicago
* 49ers (3-4): They were game and had a lead in the 4th quarter but the offense couldn’t do anything in the second half. Up Next: vs. Tennessee
* Seahawks (2-5): Matt Hasselbeck can’t find receivers when he has no time. Go figure. Up Next: vs. Detroit
* Rams (1-7): Good for them. Finally on the board and more importantly climb into the Top 30. Up Next: BYE
