Burning Thoughts

Once again we’re suckers for soccer…

The match against Ghana had to feel like another punch to the gut. The ineptness of the first five minutes of a first half for the United States finally caught up to them. The Americans played on edge all tournament and while nobody expected a World Cup title, it feels disappointing knowing both Ghana and Uruguay are beatable teams. The fun ride came to abrupt end. It hurts knowing the USA was the only group to not advance to the quarterfinals…

I want to thank Buffalo Wild Wings for serving beer at 9am during the World Cup. Nothing like 18 wings and Guinness for breakfast…

So the United States’ ancestor and neighbor were each also screwed by the FIFA refs. Sorry Mexico and England but chances are you wouldn’t have advanced farther anyway…

Free agency starts Thursday. Nope I don’t care about NBA free agency, I’m more concerned if the Los Angeles Kings land Ilya Kovalchuk…

As for the NBA everyone is taking a maximum contract wherever they go…

How have the Tampa Bay Rays been no-hit three times in a season and half? I give credit to the Diamondbacks for leaving Edwin Jackson despite 149 pitches. What pitch count?…

Cedric Benson keeping Austin criminalized…

The United States not Ghana win one anytime soon…

World Cup Group Recap

Americans (Dis)Allowed In, Tradition Triumps, Asian Influence, Disappointing Hosts, and Removing the Euro Trash

And Donovan Scores:

• Despite being robbed by the refs of a victory against Slovenia and a sure goal by Clint Dempsey against Algeria, Landon Donovan’s goal in stoppage time gave the United States the victory, claiming the Group C title and a very favorable path to make the deepest run in World Cup history for the Americans. Donovan stepped up and became the leader everybody had hoped he would become after his impressive showing in 2002. Now can they get past the quarterfinals?
• Ho hum. Brazil, the Netherlands, and Argentina cruised to the knockout stage. Germany, England, and Spain experienced hiccups in group play but still managed to advance. The Germany-England and Spain-Portugal matchups are easily the most intriguing Round of 16 matchups.
• How about the clutch performances of Japan and South Korea? Both needed points in their final games and came away with needed performances to put two Asian nations in the knockout stages for the first time in World Cup history.
• South Africa has been a good host for this year’s tournament. However, there teams have been disappointing and somewhat horrible. Of the six host nations, only Ghana advanced to the knockout stage. The Ivory Coast and South Africa had decent showings but couldn’t emerge out of their groups. However, Algeria, Nigeria, and Cameroon didn’t win a game and finished at the bottom of their groups. While none were expected to be major players for a title there should be disappointment that only one was able to move on.
• That 2006 World Cup Final seems like a distant memory. The two most disappointing teams of the World Cup are easily Italy and France. Both finished at the bottom of their groups. France was a giant mess with players quitting, not practicing, and probably an English style affair in there somewhere. For the Azzuri, they had the easiest draw of all of the top seeds. Or so they thought. The Italians could never get anything going offensively and frankly a weak penalty call allowed them to avoid one of the greatest upsets of all-time to New Zealand. Both are aging teams and will possess a completely different make up in 2014.

Group Play quick kicks:
Group A
* Uruguay (2-1-0, 7); Mexico (1-1-1, 4); South Africa (1-1-1, 4); France (0-1-2, 1)
* The group was opened up by the ineptness of the French. France could never get on the same page and all teams took advantage. Uruguay displayed dominant defense, not allowing a goal in the group. Bufana Bufana did a great job as a host nation and essentially was a goal post in the 89th minute from advancing. Neither Uruguay or Mexico strike me as teams that are serious threat to win it.

Group B
* Argentina (3-0-0, 9); South Korea (1-1-1, 4); Greece (1-0-2, 3); Nigeria (0-1-2, 1)
* Maybe Diego Maradona knows what he’s doing after all. Argentina was dominant as they breezed through group play with flair and offensive explosion even without Lionel Messi scoring a goal. South Korea downed Greece in the opening match which turned out to be difference in the group. Nigeria had a disappointing and lethargic showing.

Group C
* United States (1-2-0, 5); England (1-2-0, 5); Slovenia (1-1-1, 4); Algeria (0-1-2, 1)
* I’m trying to decide what’s more impressive? The USA actually winning a group in the World Cup or winning a group despite two disallowed goals? Landon Donovan’s rebound strike changed the complexion of the group. England advanced but does not look good at all. Wayne Rooney has been invisible and frankly the difference in the play of #10’s is the difference in the group. Slovenia and Algeria were game in each match and nearly shook up the group.

Group D
* Germany (2-0-1, 6); Ghana (1-1-1, 4); Australia (1-1-1, 4); Serbia (1-0-2, 3)
* Germany had a hiccup against Serbia but were able to defeat Ghana to take the group. Ghana will be the only host representative in the knockout stage thanks to penalty kicks to defeat Serbia and tie Australia. The Socceroos had a horrible start against Germany and it would up costing them in the goal differential. Serbia had their shining moment against a 10-man German team.

Group E
* Netherlands (3-0-0, 9); Japan (2-0-1, 6); Denmark (1-0-2, 3); Cameroon (0-0-3, 0)
* The only group without a draw. The Dutch were suppose to win this group and did rather easily. Japan used two brilliant free kicks to eliminate Denmark in the final matchup of the group. Cameroon was the first team eliminated in tournament.

Group F
* Paraguay (1-2-0, 5); Slovakia (1-1-1, 4); New Zealand (0-3-0, 3); Italy (0-2-1, 2)
* Italy had the easiest path to finish atop a group but finished on the opposite end of the spectrum. The story was the All Whites of New Zealand. They were able to tie all three matches after never scoring goal in previous World Cup appearances. Paraguay coasted rather easily to win the group and Slovakia took advantage of a pressing Italian team to claim a decisive 3 points.

Group G
* Brazil (2-1-0, 7); Portugal (1-2-0, 5); Ivory Coast (1-1-1, 4); North Korea (0-0-3, 0)
* This group came down to Portugal’s bludgeoning of North Korea. The 7-0 victory made it impossible for the Ivory Coast to make up the goal differential in the final match and it allowed Brazil and Portugal to sleep walk through a 0-0 tie. Brazil finished on top. Shocker.

Group H
* Spain (2-0-1, 6); Chile (2-0-1, 6); Switzerland (1-1-1, 4); Honduras (0-2-1, 4)
* The group was turned upside down when Switzerland defeated Spain in the opening match. Spain quickly regrouped and defeated both Honduras and Chile rather easily. Chile looked solid in two early victories and made an effort against Spain but came up short. The Swiss had to be a little disappointed with not advancing given the early upset victory.

It only took 91 minutes to reach climax…

This is really simple: The United States advanced and won their group. First things first, yes the USA should’ve beaten Slovenia and taken a 1-0 lead in the first half against Algeria. Thanks to two awful calls by the officials, 360 million people cared about football—soccer—in this country. But now, who cares? Thanks to another clutch Landon Donovan goal, the USA advanced, won Group C and has a very nice path to reach the semifinals. The dream continues on Saturday…

My very attractive but very engaged upstairs neighbor has agreed to play the role of Goose at the bars. Negative ghost rider the pattern is full…

I can say without a doubt Lakers-Celtics Game 7 goes down as the worst game ever played to decide a championship in my lifetime. I haven’t watched an NBA game in its entirety since 2004 and after that display I know why. Still the Lakers made a great comeback to narrow the gap to 17 to 16 in championships compared to the Celtics…

Now the big question is where does Kobe Bryant rank among the greats with 5 championships? Right now Kobe ranks as the 2nd greatest Laker of all-time behind Magic. When he gets his 6th championship he will pass Magic on the Laker realm. The six will of course tie him with Mike but there will be a Shaq asterisk by the two. Point blank if Kobe gets to 8 championships he should go down as the greatest player ever…

DONOVAN! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL…

Man a lot has gone on in the world of sports in two weeks let’s gets to it…

First of all the World Cup has started. My favorite sporting event. Actually not the event but more about the hypocrisy in America that goes with it. A bunch of white people that root for European countries that they’ve never been to is acceptable but minorities that root for countries of their previous generations should be kicked out of the country for being assholes. It’s great…

As for the big match of the World Cup between the United States and England, a 1-1 draw is a perfect ending. We’re up and coming but not at the elite level and England is again the most overrated European football team. Obviously the goal that was scored will go down as one of the worst in World Cup history but the match was even throughout and a draw was fitting…

Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks for ending the 49 year Stanley Cup Championship drought. Correctly predicted by me, the Hawks outlasted the Flyers in 6 games as Patrick Kane scored the winner in overtime. The first five games were all home ice victories but Kane ended the curse in the extra frame in front of Philly fan. Now the longest Cup drought belongs to the Toronto Maple Leafs. I’m sure the people in Toronto aren’t aware…

Lakers-Celtics are living up to the hype. It’ll go 7…

Speaking of Lakers-Celtics, how about one of the biggest rivals in college sports meeting for the championship? UCLA softball outlasted Arizona for their 11th championship and their first since 2004. UCLA was given a gift dropped fly ball to win Game 1 and carried the momentum for a sweep…

And I’m sorry girls but if you want to be on equal footing with men, then the gaffe between Britany Lastrapes and Lauren Schutzler was inexcusable. It’s the center fielder’s ball. Awful play…

Kudos to Jim Joyce for being a man and owning up to his mistake on the Armando Galarraga perfect game. He was wrong. He owned it. Good for him. Still, it should’ve been the third perfect game of the season…

I’m sorry but when it matters on the national stage, England, you just can’t beat the Yanks…

World Cup Preview

June 6th, 2010 Chip No comments

On June 11th the biggest sporting event in the world takes place in South Africa.  For one month  countries whose teams are involved in a match will stop everything and tune in…………………….well 31 countries will.  The 32nd country is my country, The United States of America, where in previous years we are lucky to get more than 30 seconds on any sports show.  Hopefully that changes this year as ESPN has the rights to the World Cup and will probably market the hell out of it.

Why our country is for the most part apathetic is probably a combination of our national team not being that good, us not creating the sport (see hockey) and the limited coverage of foreign top leagues which gives an outsiders feel to our viewers and a shitty product for the casual observer when he sees the MLS.  So here is a quick breakdown of what you need to know about the beautiful game.  I will not break down every team as that would bore the hell out of most people. Instead I will give you the key teams and players to know and follow for the next month.

Teams should win it all (In no particular order):

Brazil – Even non fans usually know Brazil is the king of world football.  Most know the name of Pele.  This years squad will not be like those of past years and it has to do with their coach.  Gone is the wreck-less offensive abandon of years past and in its place is a ruthless team that actually plays defense.

Player to know:  Kaka – former world player of the year who after a disappointing club year should be out to prove his mettle.

Why they wont:  Is Brazil really Brazil without reckless offensive abandon?  If they finish 2nd in the group the first knock out round game is against Spain.

Spain:  The deepest team in the tournament.  If they grab the lead you will not get the ball back.  Their passing is brilliant and their players are some of the best in the world.  They also bucked a Spanish trend of losing in major tournaments as they won the previous Euro’s.

Player to know: Fernando Torres- slightly dinged up but should be good to go.  The player my roomate calls “She” could win the golden boot.

Why they wont:  Could revert to pre Euro 2008 form and choke away a game.  The health of Xavi is also a concern and they could face Brazil or Portugal in their first elimination game.

Netherlands: Talented team that could take it all. Infighting could undue them.

Player to know: Robin van Persie – Arsenal forward who the Dutch will need to play well and not lash out at teamates if they are to win it all.

Why they wont:  Infighting and an undependable Defense.

Teams that could win it all:

Argentina: Offensively loaded.  They have arguably the best player (reigning world player of the year) in the world in Lionel Messi.   Diego Milito is also on fire, he scored 2 goals in the Champions League final.  They have the firepower to do it.

Player to Watch: Lionel Messi- his coach has been quoted as saying “he is playing futbol with Jesus”.  This guy has been spectacular.  The NFL equivalent would be Barry Sanders, diminutive and electric.  He could single handedly lead Argentina to the title.

Why they wont:  Diego Maradona is not exactly a great coach and brings up some goofy tactics and formations, and Messi has yet to live up to his club play for the national side.

Portugal: Won over and over when they had to as they faced elimination with any loss during qualifying.  Like Argentina they have arguably the best player in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo.  This is Portugal’s “Golden Generations” (Figo, Deco) last go around for a major title.  They finally have a decent keeper Eduardo to match a good defense led by Pepe.

Player to watch: Cristiano Ronaldo – Can single footedly take over a match and win it for his side.  Unbelievable speed and has the strength to fight off defenders (when he chooses not to dive).  He can strike from distance and is very dangerous during set pieces.

Why they wont:  They are in the group of death.  If they finish 2nd they will most likely draw Spain in the first stage of the knockout round.  Ronaldo has yet to show his league form on for the national team.

England: In South Africa it is winter!  This helps the English style.  I would have rated them higher had it not been for an injury to Rio Ferdanand.  They still have the talent to take the cup but will need sublime play from Rooney.

Player to watch: Wayne Rooney – Americans could fall in love with this guy.  Strong, not one to dive and he hustles far back to play defense, too far for a striker to the detriment of his offense which England needs.  He was the second leading scorer in the English Premier League.

Why they wont:  Injuries and questions at keeper.

Germany: Overall strong team.  They are great at nothing but don’t be surprised to see them go deep or even take the whole thing.

Player to watch: Thomas Muller – scored 19 goals this year in all competitions.  Young gun who must be itching to put his mark on the world stage.

Why they wont:  Not exceptional at anything.  A team in transition whose established strikers have not had good years.

France: They have world class players.  One on his last legs (Henry) another wanted by every club on earth (Ribery).  Both will want to put in fine performances.

Player to watch: Frank Ribery – Hot name on the club acquisition wire.  He will want to put on a show.  Think of the World Cup as contract years for players in the NFL.  Guys get unbelievable pay days from one tourney.  Everyone wants him now.  A great cup performance will drive his price even higher.

Why they wont: Turmoil, just google “French football 16 year old prostitute”, Henry is almost 33 and seen better days, with no Benzema even more pressure will be on him.  They team barely qualified for the World Cup and even got help from a handball just to beat the Irish.

Italy: Best goal keeper in the world in Buffon.  A strong defensive team who can score when needed.  Veteran stars have been here before.

Player to watch:  Gianluigi Buffon – Greatest keeper on the planet when he is fit and on his game good luck getting shots by him.

Why they wont:  Aging team could be on the verge of old and not just experienced.  And they stunk it up in the Confed Cup.

Longshots:

Cote d’Ivoire: Didier Drogba is one of the best strikers in the world.  Like Messi and Ronaldo he could take his team on his back and score them to victories.  He led the EPL in goals this season.  Watch the South Africans rally behind this team as many believe it is the best African shot to make some noise.

Player to watch: Didier Drogba – see above.

Why they wont: Drogba may miss the cup.  If he does they have no shot.  If he plays they have a shot to make it out of the group of death that Portugal and Brazil are in with them.  If they finish 2nd and advance they then are likely taking on Spain in the first knockout stage round.

United States of America: Hey why not?  And how can I not at least give  a quick preview for our guys.  American soccer is riding high after our most impressive finish in a major international competition with our second place finish at the ConFed Cup.  If not for a collapse in the second half to Brazil we would have won the whole thing.   Our team is scrappy.  They do not give up and they work their asses off.  Not the most talented bunch but they will not lay down for anyone.  The South Africans nicknamed our boys the “Terriers” during the ConFed cup as they admired how our smaller players did not back down to the world powers.  As we do not have an official team nickname I say we stick with the Terriers.  Can surprise on the counter attack and are finally starting to get better athletes like Altidore, Onyewu.  Our goal keeping is world class and we finally may have some other forwards ready to step up in Gomez and Buddle.

Player to watch:  Clint Dempsey – Donovan is the player most Americans know but he seems to disappear in big games at times.  Dempsey had a breakout year for Fulham and you will not intimidate him.  His confidence should be high.  Lets hope he pours in some goals for us especially now that Altidore may have an ankle issue and is unproven.

Why they wont:  Injuries and not the same individual talent-  Charlie Davies is most likely out for the cup.  Small shot he could be placed on still but I doubt it.  He was our one player with world class pace.  Big blow that he is out.  Onyewu is also still recovering from a knee injury that caused him to miss the whole Serie A season.  Altidore also just hurt his ankle.  If Onyewu and Altidore are not on the top of their games it will most likely be a long cup for the Terriers.

My final pick:  Spain 3  -  Brazil 1

The deepest team in the tournament wins it.  The Spaniards match their Euro triumph and pull off the impressive double.  When they are on they are such a beautiful team to watch as their passing is out of this world.  I don’t think Brazil selected the strikers needed who are in good enough form to keep up and Kaka has been injury prone.  Spain gets the early lead and then puts on a clinic in ball control.  David Villa scores two goals and Torres nets one in the final.  Torres wins the golden boot (top scorer) and is named the best player (Golden Ball) of the tourney.

Burning Thoughts

June 1st, 2010 Travis No comments

I hope everybody had a good Memorial weekend. The calendar roles into June, the weather is nice, burgers and beer is a regular lunch, and women wear less clothing…

I know it’s belated but I’m taking the Blackhawks in 6. Philadelphia has had a magical run to get to the finals but Chicago is too deep and have the goaltending to match Philly. Throw in the fact Chicago has won 7 consecutive road games and I think it’s going to take at least a 2 road wins for Philadelphia to take the Cup because Chicago will win a game on the road…

So now we have a familiar matchup in NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics for the 12th time. The Celtics hold a 9-2 edge all-time including the championship in 2008. The Lakers hold the home court this time which always makes a difference in the 2-3-2 format. This Laker team is deeper and tougher from the 08 team and throw in the fact that with 5 rings Kobe will Magic Johnson’s Laker record and one between Michael. The way Kobe is locked in, it’s tough to bet against him. Lakers in 6…

Really baseball is an amazing game. In a matter of three weeks we’ve seen 10% of the perfect games in baseball history. Roy Halladay survived six 3-ball counts to pitch a perfect game against the Marlins and win 1-0 with the only run coming on a 3-base error on a dropped fly ball. Wow…

In preparation for the World Cup I’m going with this slogan: 1776, 1812, 1950, 2010…
